Volunteers at CORE
Lorraine
Lorraine moved to Calverton a year ago. She contacted CORE about volunteering as she was new to the area and wanted to get involved with the local community. Since joining CORE, Lorraine is now involved with many aspects of CORE. She helps set up for classes, looks after the front desk, makes amazing cuppas and chats with visitors helping to point our useful services that CORE can offer them. More recently Lorraine has become our Walking Group Leader and takes people on weekly walking tours of Calverton and the feedback from everyone is fab! “I love being part of the community and involved with people – helping people is what I enjoy the most and it gives me a sense of purpose! CORE is really important to the community because it gives people chance to meet up with friends, enjoy a new activity or service and staves of loneliness- the wellbeing it provides is outstanding!” |
Dorothy
Dorothy is a retired special needs teacher who specialised in inclusive education. She has a wealth of experience teaching all ages from 5 year olds to adults.
Dorothy came to CORE looking for a way to be helpful and use her skills in a meaningful way but she explained to us that she was rebuilding her life after a significant loss and that she needed to be around people whilst also feeling useful.
However, Dorothy was also clear to us that she did not feel comfortable taking a volunteer role which needed large amounts of public interaction such as the front desk or phones. At CORE, we recognise that all volunteers have different needs and skills and we try hard to make sure that jobs are given to people that they feel comfortable with.
We knew straight away that we had a specialist role for Dorothy and asked her to help with computer related tasks such as: making forms, making flyers and notices, and helping people on a one to one basis.
Over the weeks Dorothy helped with these tasks and we started to see her build in confidence and enjoy her role. We were also delighted with the help she offered to us. She has now begun to help people with one to one computer skills and even editing CVs.
"I am very grateful to have found The CORE Centre. I was welcomed by Sam and Becky from the beginning and they have given me encouragement and support from the start. I appreciate the opportunity to do something useful for other people at the CORE Centre, whilst also knowing that I am supported myself. I am glad to be using my skills in various ways, as this is beneficial to me as well as hopefully being useful to others".
